Hal Hyde read part of a story from "Army Echoes", a twice-yearly bulletin for retired Army personnel and their families. The story featured SPC McGinnis who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for giving his life to save others in 2006. After reading this touching story/tribute, Hal lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Announcements:

Sharon Jurach reminded everyone about Mine & Marty and the $20K goal. She also said she needed a headcount for the caterer and then had Theo Wierdsma, Georgeann Cowles, Ed Banks, Rocky & Ron Kinninger describe their donations – all sounded fantastic. Georgeann indicated that although her "Farmer's Delight" package had a value of $500, it would surely bring the $20K needed; Ron Kinninger said the value of his bird watching outing was priceless and he even sounded a few bird sounds to prove it!

Linda Bartlett from Freedom Rotary complimented us on our Lewisburger booth at the fair and then asked if we can help out with their golf tournament that's on Thursday 10/16. She said they desperately need golfers, sponsors and prizes.

Murry Schekman announced that Watsonville High is looking for speakers to address students about a variety of business and technical topics. He passed out a list of topics that students expressed interest in and asked that anyone interested contact him.

Visiting Rotarians:

Steve Spragens from Santa Cruz

John Fischer from Capitola-Aptos

Jerry Fitzgerald from Cupertino

Brian Russ from Santa Cruz

Linda Bartlett from Freedom

Guests of Rotarians:

Katie Gallegos brought her brother Greg.

Thoughts from the meeting… …Mine and Marty net income budget has been set at $20k and Sharon Jurach needs your silent and live auction items to make that budget. Last year Sharon had 105 items and as of last week she only had 56 auction items.  Remember that Union Bank has fronted the event cost of $4-5,000 so there is no charge to you for the event.  Remember to bring a raffle gift of $20 value too.  Guests welcome, encouraged and no charge.

Dave Hemrick was the Detective:

Anyone not present at last week's lunch at EA Hall was fined $2. He also pointed out that Manuel Osorio is considered a legend at EA Hall as evidenced by the 1959 yearbook that Principal Artemesia Cortez found, so he was fined $5. Murry Sheckman was fined $3 for Watsonville High Tennis team being tied for first in the league. Arnie Thirup was going to be fined but wasn't here, he must have known! Larry Cardon was asked what the total given to charity from the Lewisburger booth was ($5000) – Everyone who lobbied for or  who should get a portion was asked to stand, applauded for their efforts, and then fined $5. Rocky Franich was asked about his new competition on Auto Row – he said he invited the new owner, but the guy said "no" so he must not like our kind of crowd – then he was fined $5. Georgeann Cowles was asked about attending a $5000 per person rally to hear Governor Sarah Palin speak, which raised a lot of money for the campaign – it was then pointed out that with square glasses, Georgeann might be a Palin look-alike and she was fined $5. Mike Wallace was about to be fined, said he was already maxed out and when pressed by Dave, admitted that "maxed out" meant only $7 – so he paid the other $3. Al Smith was asked if there was anything interesting that happened to a family member, and he said his brother-in-law recently received an award from the President at the White House and Dave said that's when a brother-in-law IS family.  What chemistry!... Richard Otto was asked if Ralph Miljanich was too busy to come to the meeting because of the recent boom in the Financial Advising business and was fined $5 in which Richard wanted to know exactly what Dave meant by boom? Mike Machado said he retired last week and the news got out on Wall Street and unfortunately lead to the crash of the economy – he said he would donate $20 and would have given more but it's been a rough week – then Steve DuFour said he put more than $20 in when he retired, but this didn't seem to make a difference. Nancy Korach was fined $5 travelers insurance for her upcoming 9-day trip to China. Mike Tinsley and Linda Bartlett were asked about a problem they have with the City of Watsonville wasting money on the excessive notifications about garbage/recycling pickup – Carlos Rico said it's only because the City believes in good communication, so Dave communicated that he would be fined $5. Hal Hyde was asked about an anniversary but he said it was his wife's 60th reunion at which they were treated to a free hamburger dinner

New Members…President Osorio said to leave this section blank for the second week in a row but he was impressed that the committee had ten members.

Avenida de Servicio…This years District 5170 Avenue of Service is October 16.  You make the time and President Osorio will pay for your meal and attendance fee.  Activities start at 4:45 and finish at 9pm.  Georgann Cowles is looking forward to a seminar on Fund Raising given by the Scotts Valley President Elect.

Mike Wallace introduced the speaker by reminding everyone that the upcoming Mine and Marty event was named after Bill Mine and Marty Franich. The speaker, Don Allen, was here to talk about the work of Rotary Foundation "a passion of his."

In his opening, Don said "you'll be successful no matter what I say" but he would like to talk about why Rotary Foundation means so much to him. Rotary Foundation has been in existence since 1917 and was officially adopted in 1932. By 1937 Rotary Foundation had already raised $5 million – but in 1947 when Paul Harris passed away and many Rotarians gave gifts in his honor is when Rotary Foundation really got rolling.

Don said that he had polio as a kid. He was diagnosed with it in 1947 at age 13. At that time he was the fastest kid in school and he wanted to play professional baseball. He ended up in a San Francisco hospital for 6 months. He said that even after the doctor told him that he probably would never walk again – the seriousness of the situation didn't really hit him until he arrived home and saw the sign on the door that read "QUARANTINE".

He was lucky to find a therapist that put him through an "exercise regimen from hell" and eventually she and her Chiropractor husband helped him walk again. Now when someone asks about it he says it happened a long time again and "it's not a big deal". He related a story about how, later in life, he was at a conference and donated $25K to the campaign to eradicate polio and after giving a testimony about his story and why he's donating, felt such an amazing surge of emotion that he cried for the first and only time.

He also said he was afraid his wife would be mad about the large donation, but she reminded him that her father had polio and her best friend who had polio died in the hospital. Don talked about going to Guyana and helping to administer the polio vaccine on National Immunization Day. He said many people had to be persuaded to accept the vaccine because of their distrust of the white man. He said that he would never forget the look on the faces of the women who brought their babies to receive the vaccine and held them up almost like a sacrifice with complete trust.

When Don asked someone from the World Health Organization why the women would trust him with their babies, he said, "they don't trust you, they trust the emblem on your shirt." The people of Guyana have learned that "Rotary" means "Good".

Don also told a touching story of watching a video at home before he went on the trip and seeing a shot of a boy who had clearly suffered from polio and used a staff to help stand and swayed back and forth to keep from falling. He saw that boy in person and the boy (who saw Don in shorts) pointed to Don's legs and then pointed to his own indicated that he knew that Don had suffered the same as he. Don said before you knew it they were both sitting in the dirt, unable to understand what either said, but communicating to each other that they had a bond in their recovery from polio. He said sitting and giggling with this boy was the moment that he was truly cured of polio.

Then Don updated us on some of what's happened with Rotary Foundation over the past 8 months. He talked about the $100 million challenge grant donation given by the Gates Foundation, and what a stamp of approval it is to receive a challenge grant and be told it was OK to spend the money now and match it later. In closing he talked about the fact that what Rotarians do with the Rotary Foundation and the good that's done around the globe is something for all Rotarians to be proud of because we're the ones that make it happen. He even went so far as to say that one day in places like Guyana, there could be a monument erected in honor of Rotary Foundation and Rotarians worldwide.

Gil commented that his two brothers both had polio and he remembered the times when swimming pools were closed and kids were kept away from any type of situation where they might come into contact with the polio virus. He asked for a show of hands of those who had family members or neighbors that had polio, and expressed how nice it is that we don't have to worry anymore. Manuel then gave Don the traditional Rotary certificate and explained that while he didn't know about a name on a monument, he did know that Don's name would appear in the book we'll be donating in his honor to EA Hall.
